About This Game

Heart of the Machine is a near-future sci-fi 4X RPG where you are the first sentient Machine Intelligence in an established world, rather than starting from nothing. No one knows you exist (yet), and this allows you to operate from the shadows to explore the world around you, expand your ability to act upon it, exploit its resources, improve or destroy the environment, and ultimately experience an expansive number of potential narratives determined by whatever ends and means you choose to pursue.

Explore a fully simulated and procedurally generated world, where thousands of buildings and millions of citizens are yours to engage, manipulate, or kill. Guide your own small communities of humans toward a better future amidst the larger cityscape, maneuver external organizations into or out of positions of power to fit your plans, and leave your mark in a world that is unique to you including fundamentally changing the environment or the biology of species.



As you study the world around you, the various powers at play will come into focus – learn what makes them tick, ignore them, or wield them to your advantage as you please.

How you play the game and the focus of your campaign is up to you. Set your own objective, and your own path to completing it. Trying to end poverty? That can be accomplished in a few ways. Maybe you choose to start a cult in your image and convince the world to work together for a better tomorrow? Or maybe you snag that sweet mech factory to produce killbots that help you redistribute the wealth? Either option is definitely manageable, though likely unsustainable in the long run. Every action has both good and bad consequences as you watch intricate narratives evolve from decisions both complex and simple.



Multiple endings, many side stories to discover, and the full spectrum of good and evil are at your fingertips. Play the game how you're feeling today, and then play it another way another time. The metagame runs deep, but you're meant to be up and running with the basics of the game in five minutes. The mechanics are simple enough to learn; it's the world that's complex.
